Local Cincinnati Commercial Real Estate Office Helps Feed Cincinnati Homeless
Cincinnati, Ohio – 12/30/2021 – On December 24, Laurence Bergman and Billy Gillman with NAI Bergman, together with a group of colleagues, family, and friends, purchased food and other staple items for Cincinnati’s Shelterhouse and Bloc Ministries. What began almost two decades ago delivering gift baskets to the Drop Inn Center in Over the Rhine during the Holiday Season expanded into what is now an annual charitable event.
Shelterhouse is a community of residents, staff, and volunteers working together to provide basic human services for men and women experiencing homelessness, with a primary commitment to shelter. The Shelterhouse operates an Emergency Shelter Program, servicing over 1,527 adults in 2020 in the Cincinnati region with a total of 210 beds. Their emergency shelter offers basic survival services such as three daily meals, a bed to sleep in, toiletries, and emergency clothing items.
“Our success this past holiday included contributions and purchases that exceeded approximately $35,000. Ultimately, our goal is to continue to grow local involvement as we have done in the past, and provide these necessities to the shelter. This is the time of year when we should come together and give back. What better way to give back than to those in our own community who need it the most?” said Laurence Bergman of NAI Bergman
Laurence Bergman and Billy Gillman are already planning next year’s event hoping to give even more support than years previous. Another unique aspect to the annual food drive is that families are able to come together of all ages and contribute to this great cause. Encouraging families including children to participate in charitable giving is really what the holidays are all about.

About Shelterhouse
Shelterhouse, formerly the Drop Inn Center, is a community of residents, staff, and volunteers working together to provide basic human services for men and women experiencing homelessness, with a primary commitment to shelter.
Shelterhouse began in the early 1970’s when our founder began taking people off the streets into his own apartment to prevent them from freezing to death in the winter. In 1973 the shelter formalized as an evening shelter run entirely by volunteers and eventually incorporated as an organization in 1976 as Shelterhouse Volunteer Group, Inc., dba: The Drop Inn Center. Over the years many expansions and programs were added making us the Largest Homeless Shelter System in the Greater Cincinnati region serving over 3,000 homeless individuals each year. We operate one of the largest and most comprehensive shelter systems of its kind, not only in the state of Ohio, but also in the country. On June 5, 2015 our name changed to Shelterhouse which more accurately describes our mission of serving the whole person on their journey from shelter to housing. We now operate as the Esther Marie Hatton Center for Women and the David and Rebecca Barron Center for Men.
Last year Shelterhouse served 3,143 total people experiencing homelessness utilizing a variety of programs to expeditiously move the homeless into housing.
We operate an Emergency Shelter Program, treating over 70% of all single homeless adults in the region with a total of 210 beds. Our emergency shelter offers basic survival services such as three daily meals, a bed to sleep in, toiletries, and emergency clothing items. We are consistently operating at an over-capacity level and our nightly bed count for the last 12 months averages 258 people, well over our 210 capacity.
We also provide extensive Case Management Services to all residents by qualified case managers/social workers to move the homeless out of a shelter environment and into stable housing as quickly as possible.
Our Rapid Re-Housing Program is designed to help homeless people transition rapidly out of a shelter system. The primary goal is to stabilize a person in permanent housing as quickly as possible. We do this by identifying barriers and providing assistance to overcome those barriers. This program assists our community by reducing homelessness.
We move more people experiencing homelessness into housing than any other agency in the region. In 2016, 75% of our residents who exited the shelter, moved into a positive housing destination and 80% of these people maintained or increased their overall total income! These are extraordinarily high outcomes for this most destitute population.
We also operate an Out-Patient Recovery Program for individuals suffering from various substance abuse issues. Our Deaconess Health Check Clinics operate in both the men’s and women’s shelters and offer medical services to all homeless people in the region at no charge. Finally, we also run the city’s Winter Shelter which operates December – February of each year and typically treats another 600-700 homeless people during these 90 days. The Winter Shelter is located on the lower level of the Barron Center for Men with its own separate entrance and occupies 10,000 square feet.
Shelterhouse provides a vital quality of life service to the community by keeping the vast majority of homeless people off the streets, thereby contributing to a more vibrant Cincinnati. We continue to serve over 70% of all single homeless adults in the region through a wide variety of programs and services with the direct goal of moving the homeless out of our shelter and into housing. In 2016 we provided 92,707 total shelter nights to homeless men and women, which represented a 17% increase from 2015. We also served a total of 125,992 meals which was a 49% increase from 2015!
